The people from Stuttgart have brought a modelcar to the market, which is limited to 300 pieces and in scale 1:43, it reminds to Le Mans 1971
On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the first admission of a sports car from the home of Porsche, the car manufacturer from Stuttgart was reminiscent of a painting of a race car of the factory team at the 24 hours of Le Mans 2018, which has remained in loving thoughts by many fans: The Porsche GT-Team cited with the coloring on the Porsche 917/20, with which the racing drivers Reinhold Joest and Willi Kauhsen went to the start at the 39th version of the traditional race at the sarthe in 1971. This car, had started with the number 23, did not match the other Porsche 917, but went technically and visually extraordinary ways. A special model of a Porsche 911 (991) GT3 in the street version, limited to 300 pieces, reminds to this painting with the item number WAXL200000 in scale 1:43.
The modelcars come in the typical for Porsche, elaborately printed packaging of a advertising model and show a photo of the role model, a miniature made out of high quality resin plastic. Let's look back: The Porsche 917 had achieved its first overall win in 1970 in Le Mans. In 1971, a modified version had been used in addition to the proven cars. This car was a combination of short and long tail version with revised aerodynamics and especially wide body, which Porsche had developed in cooperation with the french company SERA. The twelve-cylinder engine of the 917/20 designated car remained unchanged and delivered 442 kW / 600 PS to the rear axle, as in the rest Porsche 917. But it was not only the technology, which paid attention.
The racing car remained in the collective memory of the motorsport fans mainly because of its pink painting and the painted meat parts. This went back to the idea of the Porsche designer Anatole Lapine. Because of the reference to a pig and its components, the Porsche 917/20 got the nicknames "Die Sau", "Dicke Berta" or "Trüffeljäger". The car did not gain an advantage in the race: The single piece won the preparation race and thus showed its potential, but retired in fifth place in the race due to an accident. In 2018, Porsche recalled this legendary car with the 911 RSR GTE No. 92 and clinched the class win in the LMGTE Pro category with its livery.
The encounter with the role model
And that is exactly what the model car from Spark reminds us: Indespensable for every Porsche and Le Mans enthusiast, as the numerous other miniatures, which have appeared to this topic! We have met the original of the Porsche 917/20 in Berlin, where the car was presented as part of the show "70 years Porsche" at the Volkswagen-Forum Drive.
