Most car manufacturers had experienced a drop in sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic in past years, but in 2023 they managed to achieve record sales. As a result, the world’s third-largest car market is expected to introduce new models ranging from luxurious SUVs and MPVs to revamped flagship models and electric vehicles that are built from scratch.
It’s anticipated that 2024 and 2025 will be a year of transformation for car enthusiasts, as they will have access to a wide range of new vehicles.
- Mercedes-Benz EQG – Expected launch date: June 2025
Mercedes-Benz has finally unveiled the electrified version of its iconic G-Wagon, called the EQG, at the Bharat Mobility Expo. The EQG retains the G-Wagon’s signature look and ladder-frame chassis, blending old and new. It has individual motors powering each wheel, demonstrating how electrification can revolutionize off-roading ability.
The vehicle is expected to debut globally in 2025. While specific details regarding its battery size, cargo space, range, and power levels are still awaited, the EQG is likely to outgun its beloved ICE counterpart and become one of the most adept off-road vehicles available.
- Kia EV9 – Expected launch date: June 2024
Kia has recently launched its futuristic EV6, but the real star of the show is its flagship model, the EV9 SUV. This massive SUV stands over 5 meters tall and is set to become the first luxury E-SUV with three-row seating in Nigeria.
The SUV is expected to come in a top-tier dual-motor configuration and boasts a substantial 99.8 kWh battery, which promises a claimed range of 490 km. With comfortable lounge seats in the first two rows and a range of advanced driving aids, the EV9 aims to target the high-end electric SUV market, offering unparalleled utility compared to its competitors.
- BMW 5-Series LWB (and BMW i5) – Expected launch date: May 2024
BMW is all set to make history by launching the eighth-generation 5-Series alongside its electric counterpart, the i5. Even though the 2024 5-Series may not be as sleek as its predecessor, it will be available exclusively in a long-wheelbase variant, ensuring a larger and more comfortable ride while competing directly with the bestselling Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
The new 5-Series will retain the reliable 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, whereas the electric i5 will be equipped with an 81.2 kWh battery, likely with a single motor and a rear-wheel drive configuration. It will deliver 340hp and 430 Nm of torque, with an expected range of 582km. Both models will showcase BMW’s latest twin-screen layout, comprising a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen, that will be powered by the cutting-edge iDrive 8.5 system.
- Lexus LM – Expected launch date: March 2024
The Lexus LM is a luxurious vehicle that surpasses even the plush Toyota Vellfire. With a 48-inch TV screen, airline-style recliner seats, reading lights, fold-out tables and a glass partition between the driver and the rear passenger, the LM is an exceptional masterpiece. It is the perfect vehicle to be stuck in traffic, as it feels like a first-class airline lounge.
Although a utility-focused six-seater version is also available, the full Lexus experience is only available in the four-door version. The LM 350h is powered by a 3.5-litre turbo-petrol hybrid powertrain, making it an outstanding car that will exceed your expectations.
- Lamborghini Urus Hybrid – Estimated launch date: End of 2024
The Lamborghini Urus was the world’s first true super-SUV and its success has inspired other performance car makers to follow its lead. However, the Urus is staying ahead of the competition with the upcoming release of its hybrid version.
The Urus Hybrid will feature the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine as its predecessor but will also have an electric motor that produces an extra 174 bhp. This additional power gives the Urus a significant advantage over its rivals, such as the naturally aspirated Purosangue, which is also vying for dominance in the market.
- Audi Q8 e-tron – Expected launch date: October 2024
Although the world is eagerly waiting for the launch of the Audi Q6-e tron, it is unlikely to be available in Nigeria until 2025. In the meantime, customers in Nigeria can opt for the refurbished version of Audi’s electric flagship SUV, the Q8 e-tron. While the Q8 e-tron retains the same powertrain – a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol V6 engine, it has undergone some cosmetic changes such as a sharper-looking front and rear end, bigger and flashier alloy wheels, and the inclusion of Audi’s proprietary Matrix LED headlamps.
With a price tag similar to the previous model, this updated version of the Q8 e-tron should keep the brand’s EV portfolio stocked up until the more exciting Q6 and Q4 e-tron models arrive next year.
- 2025 Toyota Camry – Expected launch date: January 2025
As the Camry will be entering its ninth generation with the 2025 model, the 2025 Toyota Camry sedan gets a fresh look and is only available in a hybrid engine. It also will be available only in either front- or all-wheel drive, and the new hybrid-only Camry will produce 232 horsepower. Toyota also completely revamped the interior of the 2025 Camry with more modern infotainment tech and styling.
Toyota has not yet released the EPA for the 2025 Toyota Camry, however, experts note that it is expected to earn similar ratings as the 2023 Camryhybrid models, which is 51 mpg city and 53 mpg highway.
