“Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather”

Gordon H. Elliott, 97, of Oakville died peacefully on Tuesday July 2, 2024 at his home. He was the loving husband of Joyce (Bria) Elliott.

Gordon was born September 28, 1926 in New Brunswick, Canada, a son of the late Allan Arthur and Sadie Wilhelmina (Chase) Elliott.

Gordon Elliott attended Walsh Grammar School and Wilby High school. After graduation from high school, he joined the United States Navy at age 17, where he served in the Caribbean and Pacific Theaters during World War II. When discharged, he had received the Asiatic Pacific, American Theater, and Good Conduct Medals. After discharge from the Navy, he attended Post College for two years - where he played basketball. At the time, he also played football with the Wolcott Rams.

After graduation from Post College, where he earned an Associate Degree in Accounting, he continued working at the Waterbury Trust Company, which later became known as the Connecticut National Bank. Eventually, he was sent to NABAC School for Bank Auditors at the University of Wisconsin, where he attended summer school for three years, with corresponding assignments during those years, and later graduation.

His interest in sports continued to grow, especially as he and a group of friends brought professional baseball to our city in 1973. Judge Frederick Mascolo, Attorney Don Rinaldi, Prof. George Barnhardt, Milton Grabow, Duke Delpo, and Gordon brought the farm teams of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants to Waterbury, CT’s Municipal Stadium. Baseball was a wonderful common interest for many people in Waterbury, and surrounding areas for years to come.

He was one of the founding fathers of the Olympian Club, a Past President, Olympian Award Winner in 2000 and always a very involved member. Besides the Olympian Club, he was a member of the Exchange Club of Waterbury, and also a Past President. He was a founding member of the Water-Oak Gold Circle of Sports - Life Member and Past President, and in 1996 a recipient of the Gold Ring. Also, with the Gold Circle of Sports, he enjoyed going on the annual trip to a football game with the Watertown Sports Fantasy Group.

At the time John and Kyle attended Watertown High School, he was very involved with the Watertown High School Gridiron Boosters Club, and was a Past President. He was responsible for getting out the monthly newspaper for the Gridiron Club, and enjoyed that role very much.

He worked for the Connecticut Junior Achievement and the Cancer Society, in connection with his being a part of Connecticut National Bank, receiving an award from the Cancer Society. He has always been involved with his community, and especially enjoyed the sports aspect of his involvement.

He retired from Connecticut National Bank after 30 plus years of service, and went on to a second career working for Creative Management Real Estate in Waterbury for over 12 years. After full retirement, he and Joyce spent winters in Boynton Beach, FLA, where they enjoyed playing cards and bocce with the neighbors, as well as soaking up the nice weather. He and Joyce returned to their fulltime home in Oakville in 2020.
